Abstract
I will look at the use (or not) of evidence, especially evaluations, in recent public policymaking in the UK. I will focus on local economic development issues and policies, and the experience of the 'what works' policy experiment, specifically the What Works Centre for Local Economic Growth. I will give some background on the origins of the What Works approach, review the Centre's main activities, including our work on industrial strategies and Brexit, and give a high-level overview of some key findings. Taking a political economy approach, I will also look at some of the challenges involved in setting up and running the Centre, and similar institutions, now and in the future.
