Abstract

This thesis explores aspects of social and economic organisation and identity at the site of Ntuusi, western Uganda, through the detailed analysis of its ceramic material. The 2nd millennium CE site, which emerged during a time of considerable social and political change in Africa’s Great Lakes, currently provides the earliest dated evidence of the region’s later ubiquitous rouletted pottery. Although excavation and analysis of faunal remains has provided tantalising evidence of these changes, Ntuusi and the development of these new socio-political structures remains poorly understood. The research, rather than focussing on ceramic style, which is fairly uniform at the site, focuses on the detailed investigation of ceramic technology through archaeometric methods. Using a combination of mineralogical (petrography, micro-XRD) and chemical (pXRF, WD-XRF) techniques, this study investigates both ceramic technology and provenance. In doing so, the thesis draws out vital information on ceramic traditions, production scale, distribution and trade/exchange. This research suggests the potential of a socially focussed study employing archaeometric techniques on African ceramic material. Specifically, to interpret complex sociocultural phenomena such as social stratification, definition of identity and political development during asignificant period in African prehistory. More broadly, it is hoped that a greater understanding of the changing way of life at Ntuusi will provide vital comparative information for examining social, economic and political changes taking place across the continent at this time.
