Abstract
Studies of end-user conceptualisations of the bibliographic universe are rare, but represent an important area of research for those interested in furthering the cause of bibliographic control. To this end, as a preliminary study, 300 survey respondents were asked to list the kinds of material they obtained from their public library; the resulting categories were analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. It was found that most categories could be covered by conventional library cataloguing, but that a significant number (about 5%) could not. Overall, the categories represented a mixture of content and carrier aspects, with more constituting forms of content than subjects. Ways in which the ‘bibliographic domain’ could be investigated both more broadly and more deeply are discussed.
