Abstract
The book “Women in Brazil: how we got here”, edited by Cristiana Facchinetti, is a collection of eight historical essays written by researchers from different areas, exploring a period of around 100 years. In this work, the authors challenge the dominant narrative that has historically highlighted the white, Western male, neglecting the voices of women and their individual experiences, subjectivities, and ethical and political struggles. The essays cover various topics, such as formal female education in the 19th century, the role of working women in the early 20th century, the influence of fashion on social changes, the female presence in Brazilian art and cinema, the role of women in public health and the persistent struggle of black women writers. In short, this book pays tribute to women of the past, begins a dialogue with women of the present and points to a future that reinforces the fundamental role of women in the construction of Brazilian identity.
