Abstract

Portuguese authors set out in the sixteenth century not just to describe the world, but also to shape it as they wrote about their own travels and those of others. This article explores the cartographic structures of travel writing and offers a preliminary interpretation of the key representational practices regarding terrestrial space (globally, within the Empire and beyond) in written works. One aspect explored is the contrast between writing practices that followed the experiential realities of the travellers, on the one hand, and others more closely associated with new cartographical conventions of the Renaissance – in other words, a contrast between horizontal and vertical perspectives in the perception and representation of space by Lusophone authors of the early modern period. The interpretive tools thus presented are applicable to other texts and in other contexts.
