Abstract

Requirements for backhaul and fronthaul links in future cellular wireless networks and the potential role of photonically generated millimetre-wave and THz wireless signals for these applications are discussed. An experiment demonstrating photonically generated 50 Gb/s 16QAM wireless transmission at 182 GHz for backhaul and 7 Gb/s fronthaul at 31 GHz is presented and analysed. The fronthaul link uses a novel digital radio-over-fibre compression system which allows 14 LTE channels to be transmitted within the 10 Gb/s line rate.
