Abstract

Focusing on the first two sections of the Part IV of the first book of the Treatise of Human Nature, we propose in this paper the study of the notion of natural propensity to identity in Hume. Our aim is to seize the principles, in the imagination, through which the mind is induced to conceive identity, whether of the mind or of the external objects. Since, according to Hume, each perception has a separate and distinguishable existence, we explore the reason why it arises a strong tendency to the confusion between the difference and the continuity of the same. To that, we question the meaning of what, in the mentioned sections of the Treatise, presents itself as a natural way of thinking, interpreting it through the tendency of the imagination to satisfy itself
