Abstract

The main aims of this thesis were to investigate sleep characteristics of autistic children in Saudi Arabia in comparison to the UK population. The evaluation of maternal sleep, mental health and cortisol was carried out as a novel aspect in the sleep research field. This thesis is divided into six chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 introduce the topic and review of the relevant literature. Chapter 1 describes sleep architecture and the importance of sleep for healthy physiological and psychological functioning. Chapter 2 provides and outline on autism characteristics, sleep in autism and mental health literature in families of autistic children. Chapter 3 presents Study 1 which examined sleep profiles of school aged autistic children in Saudi Arabia using parents’ sleep and behavioural questionnaires and sleep diaries. Chapter 4 presents Study 2 which compares sleep profiles of adolescent autistic children in the UK and Saudi Arabia. Chapter 5 presents Study 3 which examines maternal sleep, mental health, and cortisol profiles. It also explores sleep using sleep questionnaires and objectively via actigraphy. It also presents Study 4 which examined mental health and sleep via questionnaires in mothers in Saudi Arabia. Finally, Chapter 6 provides a general summary of the findings from the four studies carried out in this thesis. Further suggestions are made for future research.
