Abstract

The article presents preliminary research on the impact of COVID-19 on death, dying and bereavement. This study examines from a sociological perspective how social norms and values were shaped and changed as a result of the experiences of loss and grief during the COVID-19 outbreak. By examining relevant media and academic discourses, the author takes a critical look at the challenges faced by those who die and grieve during this pandemic, and further considers the need for better support for future loss. Individuals and collectives have been found to express different needs in response to the loss and grief associated with COVID-19. The essay shows that grief is a process of reflection, and emphasizes the importance of timely, holistic and ongoing support. In addition, the importance of the sociocultural environment becomes apparent. Ultimately, this article explores ways to further develop support for loss.
