Abstract

Tissue engineering (TE) approaches have emerged as a good treatment for osteoarthritis (OA) patients. However, to get a optimal tissue engineering product needs to follow trial-and-error analyses to investigate suitable product which is time-consuming and expensive. Computational analysis can now be used to investigate complex tissue regeneration process. Cell seeding, the first tissue engineering process, is really closely related to final tissue regeneration but hard to investigate. The reason is that animals sacrificing at the beginning tissue engineering step is not worth for doing in vivo tests. Numerical models to simulate cell attachment could substitute this sacrifice and help researchers to better understand the cell distribution after this process. Cell attachment model is created combined with multiphase model and discrete phase model to investigate cell distribution during this process. Furthermore, nutrient transport and distribution during tissue engineering process are also investigate by solving species transport model. All these models showed the same results that tissue regenerate more on the outside of the scaffold rather inside which is similar to in vivo tests. These models are not only able to help researchers to understand tissue engineering processes but also able to evaluate scaffold geometry and material properties with different input boundary conditions.
