Abstract
Europe’s largest decentralised memorial is artist Gunter Demnig’s Stolpersteine—‘stumbling stones’— small brass plaques installed in the pavement in front of the former homes of victims of Nazi persecution. The plaques are controversial, and have been celebrated, imitated, and vandalised, triggering myriad afterlives. These installations are counter-memorials, a genre of art and memory activism.
