Abstract

This chapter examines the position of the child in Latin American cinema, introducing the various filmmaking movements, tendencies and genres in which child-protagonists have featured, and proposing the ideological resonances of child-figures and childhood, in relation, especially, to issues of politics, of history, of cultural identity and of mobility. The chapter argues that the child in film may be a way of engendering or inviting a certain spectatorial mobility, and that this figure may thus allow the adult spectator a means of negotiating contradictory or heterogenous experiences. It examines these ideas in relation to a recent Mexican film, Pedro González Rubio’s Alamar (2009), arguing that in this film the mobile child engenders a mobile, transitional and transnational spectatorship, whilst the child’s perspective is associated with the portrayal of diverse experiences of time, and with the possibility of sensorial visuality that these imply. The chapter ends with a consideration of the child’s presence in the film as rhetorical guarantor of its documentary authenticity.
