Abstract

The Royal Society in the United Kingdom is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading learned societies. The Society’s fundamental purpose, reflected in its founding Charters of the 1660s, is to recognise, promote and support excellence in science and to encourage the development and use of science for the benefit of humanity. Its Fellows (members) are in the sciences, broadly understood to encompass not only the natural sciences (chiefly, biology, chemistry, earth science and physics) but also computer science, mathematics and engineering. The more scientific aspects of psychology and geography fall within its remit, so that some psychologists and geographers are among the small number of those who are Fellows of both the Royal Society and the British Academy. This entry provides an overview of the Royal Society, including its origins and early years, organizational structure, and contemporary activities.
