Abstract

Heads of Maths and year 11 maths teachers were questioned about their tier entry decisions as part of a two-year research study probing responses to the reformed Mathematics GCSE qualifications and available free support. The first year’s work showed teachers historically confident to make tiering decisions now challenged, ‘like jumping off a cliff’. We found teacher insecurity reflected in student lack of confidence. Tier entry decisions were often made very late and for strategic rather than educational reasons. We report on teachers’ rationales, and staff and students’ reflections on tier entries and related GCSE outcomes.
