Abstract

Cet article a pour objectif de porter un regard transversal et comparatif sur le rôle des friches « culturelles » dans les villes européennes, tout particulièrement en France, Grande-Bretagne, Allemagne et Suisse. Cette réflexion croisée nous permet de dégager une double typologie fondée, d’une part, sur la nature de la friche et des acteurs en présence et, d’autre part, sur l’ensemble de la trajectoire de mutation induite par les processus de régénération urbaine. Qu’elles soient spontanées et rebelles, régularisées ou institutionnelles, les friches marquent les paysages culturels et urbains et ont divers usages dans les processus de régénération, à la fois supports et outils, marqueurs urbains et labels. // This paper provides a cross-sectional and transnational analysis of brownfield sites within urban and cultural regeneration strategies and projects in Europe, by way of specific case studies selected in France, Britain, Germany and Switzerland. We focus on the role of the nature of the brownfields and the actors involved, and on the importance of the different steps characterizing the trajectories of change in these derelict spaces. Particular emphasis is placed on how, during periods of standstill different categories of brownfield lands appear (spontaneous and rebellious brownfields, regulated brownfields and institutionalized brownfields) and leave their mark on the cultural and urban landscape. Their role in urban regeneration dynamics as vehicles, tools, urban markers and “labels” is also explored.
