Abstract

The exercise of urban power over the territory is approached here from the perspective of informal relations that intrinsically accompanied the Castilian institutional structure. Through the prohibitions in the real documentation, a series of practices are reconstructed that were persecuted for being considered corrupt by promoting favor deals, bribes, fraud and even the formation of sides and riots. In particular, the figures related to clientelism, such as servants, close friends, and sleeping parties, are analyzed; the extension of this model to the territory by establishing the rulers of the city some relations with the officials of the land that the sources consider quasi-vassal; and the role of gifts in this whole system of interpersonal ties where custom and courtesy were irretrievably confused with bribery. The article argues that it is wrong to conceive of these personalistic practices merely as abuses and perversions of politics. Patronage, which benefited servants and close friends, bedding and the exchange of gifts were essential elements of the late medieval power relations. For this reason, the submission of land to the city necessarily reproduced these same practices. bedding and exchanging gifts were essential elements of late medieval power relations.
