Abstract

New Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) regulations and the development of 2-stroke natural gas (NG) burning diesel-engines have put pressure on the Dual Fuel Diesel Engine (DFDE) propulsion system, which is gradually displacing the low efficient steam turbine propulsion system, as the preferred choice for future Liquid Natural Gas carriers (LNGCs). This has led to innovations and developments to improve the efficiency of DFDE LNGCs. One such development is the adoption of the exhaust gas waste heat recovery system (EGWHRS) to improve efficiency. This paper investigates the practical application of an EGWHRS and how it impacts on the efficiency of DFDE vessels. From this study, it has been found that the use the EGWHRS gives an increase in efficiency of 6.6% during practical sea going operations resulting in considerable financial savings over a one year period. The results also indicated that the efficiency improvements based on the use of the EGWHRS ensures that current designs fitted with this system will meet the EEDI baseline regulations mandated by the IMO from 2025 onwards.
