Abstract

This article focuses on rabbinic sermons delivered in Italian synagogues during the First World War, connecting them to a broader analysis of the relationship between the minority, the national patriotic narrative and the State after the emancipation. It identifies some of the key themes and structures of these so far neglected sources - punishment, redemption, regeneration, messianism, patriotism, loyalty – reflecting on how the turning point of Spring 1915 forced rabbis to reinterpret the religious tradition to make sense of and to justify Italy’s entry into the conflict.
