Abstract
The process by which adolescents and teenagers face the transition to adulthood has changed substantially in the Western developed world. This is one of the demographic transformations that have occurred in the last 50 years, and can be framed in the second demographic transition theory. In this work the main changes in the life course trajectories of young adults are highlighted, and the differences across gender and social class are described. Also, the role of institutions and culture in shaping the transition to adulthood is taken into account.
