Abstract

Dataset on the provision of five ecosystem services (biodiversity, Brazil nuts, carbon storage, soil quality for agriculture, and timber) in 24 sampling sites in Eastern Amazon forest, Brazil. Further details on the methodology used to obtain and analyse the data can be found in Chapter 5 of the following reference: Milheiras, S. (2019) Linking people and nature in the multifunctional landscapes of Eastern Amazonia. [PhD thesis] Centre for Biodiversity and Environmental Research, UCL (University College London): London, UK. The dataset has seven variables: "forest_use"; "sites"; "carbon"; "timber"; "brnut"; "soil_index"; "rich_insects". "forest_use": forest use category (PRI=old-growth forest; BN= Brazil nut extraction area; RIL= reduced impact logging area; PLA= eucalyptus plantation). "sites": name of each sampling plot "carbon": mean tree carbon storage per site, using aboveground biomass as indicator (in Mg) "timber": potential total commercial timber mass per site (in tonnes) "brnut": potential Brazil nut production per site (in kg) "soil_index": index of adequacy for potential agricultural use, using seven chemical soil parameters of importance for agriculture (unitless) "rich_insects": standardised dung beetle and butterfly species richness (unitless)
