Abstract

This chapter provides a discussion of the way in which novice materials writers learn their trade, based on a number of case studies. It suggests that there are two approaches to teaching novices: an incremental practice approach, and a deep end approach. It discusses issues connected with the product that novices produce, and the challenges that the process presents to them.
