Abstract

Dans cet article, l’auteur tente d’exposer une forme, non pas d’anthropologie de l’objet, mais d’anthropologie par l’objet. À partir de l’exemple des ignames, tubercules qui occupent une place centrale dans la société Abelam de la province de l’East Sepik (Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée), il traite de la manière dont de tels objets acquièrent les propriétés qu’ils possèdent et qui leur permettent d’agir comme images, nourriture, plante et monnaies cérémonielles. L’auteur montre comment c’est à partir de l’étude de la « chaîne opératoire » complexe qui mobilise et entremêle matières, socialité et représentations pour leur donner une forme concrète que l’on peut comprendre ces propriétés singulières et leur combinaison. En conclusion, l’auteur avance que, grâce à cette méthode, on peut suggérer que si les ignames décorées sont données à voir avant d’être échangées, consommées ou replantées, c’est parce que, pour les Abelam, elles matérialisent une forme de «profil» de leur société. // In this article, the author attempts not an anthropology of an artefact, but an anthropology through an artefact. Using the example of the decorated long yams of the Abelam (East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea), tubers that occupy a central position in their contemporary society, the author explores how such objects acquire the properties that allow them to act as images, food, plant and valuables. The author demonstrates how the study of the complex “operational chain”, which mobilises and intertwines matters, sociality and mental representations, can provide an insight into these particular properties and their combinations. By way of conclusion, the author suggests that such a methodology opens up the possibility that, if decorated yams are displayed and evaluated before being consumed, replanted or exchanged, it is because, for the Abelam, they concretise a form of “profile” of their society.
