Abstract
The essay examines how two graphic novels, Anya’s Ghost by Vera Brosgol and i am not okay with this by Charles Forsman, explore the relationship between adolescent identity and empathy, considering constructs of the self in relation to the other and how this can be connected to empathy. Multidisciplinary definitions of identity are considered, and examined in a dialogic approach to how notions of identity, self and other are constructed. This process of construction is examined with a particular focus on the critical period of adolescence. The construction of identity is also considered in the interaction between the reader and the graphic novel as a multimodal art.
