Abstract
The presentation gives a summary and overview of research into pre-service science teachers design and enactment of socio-scientific inquiry based learning activities in lower secondary schools in England. A varied and rich range of SSIBL activities were used and explored. Biology topics were most popular and where PSTs were confident to do so, they developed competence in using 'critical moments' and the big challenges of the 21st century as key learning opportunities. Benefits and challenges were explored.
