Abstract

In future networks (5G and beyond) where, user demand is expected to outstrip network supply, saving spectrum is of paramount importance. There has been various studies of signal formats that can save spectrum and some of these are proposed for 5G standards. A particular format is the spectrally efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM) one with the potential to improve spectrum utilisation through bandwidth compression, at the cost of self-induced intercarrier interference. In this demonstration we will show an interactive real-time SEFDM system , where users are able to alter dynamically system parameters on demand, and any changes are immediately self-evident. Varying SEFDM parameters will impact metrics such as frequency spectrum and constellation diagrams, the latter illustrating received, equalised and detected SEFDM symbols. The innovation lies in the development and experimental, real-time implementation of baseband generation, signal assembly, signal decoding and a new frequency-domain channel estimation and equalisation method for SEFDM. The transmission is done using software defined radio equipment and over the air transmission equipment in the 2.4 GHz band. The demonstrated system shows the transmitted signal bandwidth compression up to 60% for BPSK and up to 30% for QPSK
