Abstract

Three-dimensional printed models have been increasingly used in many fields of medicine. The most common benefits have been reported in relation to a better understanding of anatomical details, an improved communication between clinicians and patients, and a more accurate planning of treatments. In the cardiovascular field, in particular for congenital heart disease, this last application could potentially revolutionize the management of complex cases, as it would foster personalized preprocedural planning thus improving patient care. Cardiovascular structures, however, are extremely challenging to replicate using materials compatible with current 3D printing technologies. Hence, patient specific computational models, generated from the same set of medical images as printed models, can be combined to 3D printing technology in order to explore many scenarios, simulate different conditions, and finally identify the optimal treatment for each specific patient. In this chapter, we review the possibilities offered by the use of patient specific models, both 3D printed and computational, in the context of cardiovascular applications.
