Abstract
This chapter considers meanings in the title ‘Right from the Start’. When does ‘the start’ begin? And how can we best understand and respect children’s rights so that, as caring adults, we ‘get it right’ in our relationships with children? I will discuss how we can ‘educate the whole person’ by attending to children’s needs and rights. The final section will review the educational benefits of approaches based on rights and respect. The examples are drawn from the literature, and my experiences as a teacher, researcher, mother, and helper in early years groups.
