Draws on empirical work from ESRC-DTI-funded PACCIT project 'Making Games'. Original contribution: The article applies semiotic principles across texts in different modes (book, film, computer game); and carries the analysis into interview data with a group of readers/spectators/players. Significance: the article was selected to be reprinted in Contemporary Literary Criticism, Vol 217, April 2006 Research basis/rigour:the analysis applies a framework of semiotic metafunctions consistently across all the data, to see how these functions perform differently in different modeas and media, and how they are realised in reader interpretation and use. The article was peer-reviewed by the editors.
