Abstract

ducational leadership in England, drawing on relevant literature. Particular use is made of data from two rounds of survey research which focussed on the impact of gender on educational leadership (Coleman, 2002, 2005a). The first round took place in the mid 1990s and the second in 2004 so a comparison between the two indicates something of the nature and extent of change in this period. The chapter begins with a brief overview of the English context as it relates to women in leadership. The choice is of England rather than the UK, as the four countries that make up the UK: England; Scotland; Northern Ireland and Wales have somewhat different education systems although the broad trends are likely to be the same across the four countries. The focus of the paper then turns to an overview of major issues for women in educational leadership in England indicating the nature of change; first in accessing and then carrying out leadership roles; and secondly exploring the impact of family responsibilities for women and men leaders and the questions that arise relating to work/life balance. The final part of this paper then turns to how we might work towards goals of equity and social justice, through the content and approach of educational leadership programs to inform and prepare leaders of the future to be more aware of gender and other diversity issues.
