Additional information: | This paper reports a study of the experiences of disabled young people and their families during out-of school time, particularly school holidays. This builds on earlier work by the authors and others. What is new is that it takes into account the context of local policy and practice. The study analysed the views of 86 children and young people, 90 parents, and 121 personnel in middle and senior management in local authority and third sector services, across 6 local authorities. Means for interviewing children with communication difficulties were adapted and developed. In spite of national policy to the contrary, the study found high levels of social isolation and exclusion among children and families. These findings are in line with earlier research. The study also identified means by which local authorities can better promote social inclusion. Importantly, families appeared to be served better in local authorities where there was evidence of a political will among councillors and officers to meet their rights and requirements.
