Additional information: | This is an invited chapter in a ground breaking book that confronts for the first time the diverse organisation and value base of social pedagogy in Europe. The authors are all acknowledged experts in the field in mainland Europe. It is an honour for a British author to have been included in the work and this represents the high standing that the groundbreaking comparative studies which I and other members of the Institutue's new Centre for Understanding Social Pedagogy (CUSP) have conducted over the last decade. The chapter summarises the findings of much of this work. It argues argues that, at the level of social and educational policy, there has long been social pedagogy in the UK, but the area has not been so conceptualised or developed. The chapter concludes that for social pedagogy to be 'imported' into this country it is necessary to adopt, and adapt, its theory base as well as the more immediately appealing aspects of its practice. |
