Title: Turning others' leaves: snapshots of reading in London classrooms
Open access status: An open access version is available from UCL Discovery
Language: English
Additional information: This article provides a careful, detailed description of the literacy practices that are engaged in when secondary school students, at three different London schools, read literary texts in the classroom. The empirical data of classroom observation are juxtaposed with the model of literacy and of development in literacy offered in policy documents, particularly in the National Curriculum. The paper questions whether the account offered by policy is adequate to encompass the ways in which students read. What the data indicate is the importance of the part played in such readings by students’ knowledge of other texts, and of the world beyond the classroom. (This article was subject to a peer review process.) This is an electronic version of an article published in Yandell, John (2005) Turning others' leaves: snapshots of reading in London classrooms.
