Title: Alternative representations of statistical measures in computer tools to promote communication between employees in automotive manufacturing
Language: English
Additional information: This paper emerges from a 3-year ESRC-funded TLRP project. It argues that employees in manufacturing industry need to interpret and communicate statistical information to improve and monitor the production processes. The study investigated how numerical measures, ‘process capability indices’, were used in a car assembly factory and how employees were trained to use them. These measures routinely failed as the boundary objects they were intended to be. The study describes and evaluates an intervention based on a new class of software objects that re-present relevant workplace relationships.
