Additional information: This research was the first to combine data from the ONS Longitudinal Study with the Millennium Cohort Study to look in a multidisciplinary way at the changing character of rural areas (education, socio-economic profiles, lone parents). The stratified sampling method of the MCS enabled a focus on deprived areas and those containing more ethnic minorities. The longitudinal span of the ONS-LS allowed a detailed analysis of population movements over 30 years. The findings have already been presented at International Conferences in Tours, France and Vaasa, Finland.
