Abstract
The act of evaluation inevitably brings into focus many of the most problematic dimensions of teaching and learning. Far from being a neutral or straightforward process, evaluation is often beset by considerable uncertainties and contradictions. While they may have several causes, these difficulties often point to unresolved questions about the aims of our teaching, about what counts as valid knowledge, and about how we identify evidence of what students have learnt. This may be particularly the case with relatively ‘new’ subjects, or those which have had to struggle to establish their educational legitimacy. In this respect, Media Studies is an interesting case in point.(1)
