One way of achieving\r\nthis is the use of animated characters endowed with emotionally expressive\r\nbehaviour. This paper describes Demeanour, a framework for generating\r\nexpressive behaviour, developed collaboratively by University College\r\nLondon and BT plc. The focus of this paper will be on two important\r\naspects; the customisation of expressive behaviour and how expressive\r\nbehaviour can be made context dependent.\r\nCustomisation is a very popular feature for internet software, particularly\r\nas it allows users to present a specific identity to other users; the ability\r\nto customise beahviour will increase this sense of identity. Demeanour\r\nsupports a number of user friendly methods for customisng behaviour, all\r\nof which use a character profile that ultimately controls the behaviour of\r\nthe character.\r\nWhat counts as appropriate behaviour is highly dependent on the context,\r\nwhere you are, who you are talking to, whether you have a particular\r\njob or role. It is therefore very important that characters are able to\r\nexhibit different behaviours in different contexts. Demeanour allows characters\r\nto load different profiles in different contexts and therefore produce\r\ndifferent behaviour."^^<http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#string> .
