N2 - This thesis focuses on an adapted Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy
(MBCT) group for depression in people with dementia (PWD) in memory clinics.
Part I is a systematic literature review, including meta-analyses, examining
the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions for depression and anxiety in people
with dementia (PWD) or mild cognitive impairment (MCI), who are experiencing
clinical symptoms of depression or anxiety. Seven randomised controlled trials
(RCTs) are included in the review.
Part II is a feasibility randomised controlled trial (RCT) that assessed
whether an adapted MBCT group in memory clinics would lead to greater
improvements in symptoms of depression, and anxiety, in PWD who were
experiencing symptoms depression, as compared to treatment as usual. This is a
joint project completed with Jacob Payne (JP). Measures of depression, anxiety,
quality of life (QOL) and cognition were assessed at baseline and follow-up. JP
reports on the feasibility of the intervention and measures of QOL and cognition.
Measures of depression and anxiety are reported here.
Part III is a critical appraisal, I will reflect on conducting the empirical study
and my experience of facilitating a Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
group. Firstly, I will share how my background influenced my choice of research.
Secondly, I will discuss the recruitment challenges and my experiences of
facilitating the adapted MBCT group. Finally, I will consider the findings of the
empirical paper, based on my experience of facilitating the group and the
discussions I had with participants and carers.
