Then the focus is more specifically on how and why paediatric ambulatory units (P AU) came into being, the literature surrounding them and their benefits. Some of the key literature is critically appraised, highlighting the different studies and their impact on the topic of setting up a paediatric ambulatory unit. Medline and Cochrane database were used to search the literature. The emergency clinic at a busy London teaching hospital is then the subject of an audit. I look at who is referred, by whom and what is the outcome of that referral. This is used as a springboard to form a guideline to aid in the setting up a PAU, which is what, in fact, is currently occurring at the hospital in which the audit was undertaken.
