This misunderstanding is contributing to poor translation and is undermining confidence in behavioural neuroscience. In this editorial, I discuss some of the reasons why the interpretation of results from many of these procedures is dubious because the criteria for validity of the test, as a model of the disorder, have been ignored. Arising from this, I propose that the description of any abnormal behaviour of rodents as a ‘model’ of a psychiatric disorder, or even ‘disorder-like’, without evidence-based justification, should be regarded as unacceptable in this journal. date: 2017-06-01 date_type: published publisher: SAGE PUBLICATIONS LTD official_url: http://doi.org/10.1177/0269881116689260 oa_status: green full_text_type: other language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green article_type: editorial_comment verified: verified_manual elements_id: 1298547 doi: 10.1177/0269881116689260 lyricists_name: Stanford, Susan lyricists_id: SCSTA01 actors_name: Waragoda Vitharana, Nimal actors_id: NWARR44 actors_role: owner full_text_status: public publication: Journal of Psychopharmacology volume: 31 number: 6 pagerange: 641-643 pages: 3 issn: 1461-7285 citation: Stanford, SC; (2017) Confusing preclinical (predictive) drug screens with animal "models' of psychiatric disorders, or "disorder-like' behaviour, is undermining confidence in behavioural neuroscience.
