abstract: Measuring eco‐innovation helps to understand the overall trends and to raise awareness in the society, especially encouraging companies to increase eco-innovation efforts. To measure eco‐innovation at the national level, two indices were developed: ASEM Eco‐innovation Index (ASEI) by the ASEM SMEs Eco‐Innovation Center (ASEIC) and Eco‐Innovation Scoreboard (Eco‐IS) by the Eco‐Innovation Observatory (EIO). To improve knowledge of two eco‐innovation indices, the ASEM SMEs Eco‐Innovation Center (ASEIC) and the Institute for Sustainable Resources at University College London are publishing a working paper entitled “Comparing Ecoinnovation Indices” as collaborative efforts of experts in the field of eco‐innovation. This working paper aims at examining and comparing the features of the ecoinnovation indices. It attempts to get insights on the strengths and weakness of two eco‐innovation indices, ASEI and Eco‐IS. Two eco‐innovation indices were analyzed with four foci: relevance of covering areas and stakeholders, ability to indicate changes, directions towards common goals and ability to facilitate further changes. The research results are expected to contribute to developing better eco‐innovation indices, extending knowledge and improving implication of eco‐innovation indices to design eco‐innovation strategies at the national level. The publishers hope that the working paper will give insight of eco‐innovation indices, so it could contribute to facilitating communication on eco‐innovation in Asia and Europe as well as in the global society.
