These are pertinent to systematic reviews that are underpinned by principles of transparency, accountability and reproducibility. We consider how the conduct of searching these resources can be compatible with the principles of a systematic search. We present an approach to address some of the challenges. This is particularly relevant when websites are relied upon to identify important literature for a review. We recommend considering the process as three stages and having a considered rationale and sufficient recordkeeping at each stage that balances transparency with practicality of purpose. Advances in technology and recommendations for website providers are briefly discussed. date: 2016-11-15 date_type: published official_url: http://doi.org/10.1186/s13643-016-0371-9 oa_status: green full_text_type: pub pmcid: PMC5111285 language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green article_type_text: Editorial verified: verified_manual elements_id: 1193342 doi: 10.1186/s13643-016-0371-9 pii: 10.1186/s13643-016-0371-9 lyricists_name: Bangpan, Mukdarut lyricists_name: Dickson, Kelly lyricists_name: Stansfield, Claire lyricists_id: MBANG28 lyricists_id: KEDIC22 lyricists_id: CMSTA07 actors_name: Stansfield, Claire actors_name: Laslett, David actors_id: CMSTA07 actors_id: DLASL34 actors_role: owner actors_role: impersonator full_text_status: public publication: Systematic Reviews volume: 5 article_number: 191 event_location: England issn: 2046-4053 citation: Stansfield, C; Dickson, K; Bangpan, M; (2016) Exploring issues in the conduct of website searching and other online sources for systematic reviews: how can we be systematic?
