Their beneficial effects reflect their ability to reduce the intestinal production/absorption of ammonia. A recent Cochrane review confirmed the efficacy and safety of nonabsorbable disaccharides for the treatment and prevention of hepatic encephalopathy in patients with cirrhosis. The findings were robust and support the use of nonabsorbable disaccharides as a first line treatment for hepatic encephalopathy, in this patient population, and for its prevention. date: 2016-09-16 date_type: published official_url: http://doi.org/10.1007/s11011-016-9910-2 oa_status: green full_text_type: pub language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green article_type_text: Journal Article verified: verified_manual elements_id: 1160252 doi: 10.1007/s11011-016-9910-2 pii: 10.1007/s11011-016-9910-2 lyricists_name: Morgan, Marsha lyricists_id: MYMOR45 actors_name: Morgan, Marsha actors_id: MYMOR45 actors_role: owner full_text_status: public publication: Metabolic Brain Disease volume: 31 number: 6 pagerange: 1361-1364 event_location: United States issn: 1573-7365 citation: Morgan, MY; (2016) Current state of knowledge of hepatic encephalopathy (part III): non-absorbable disaccharides.
