These measures however fail to directly account for differences in physical capabilities and mobility levels of different social groups of people. Also, many of the access issues for the excluded groups of people such as the elderly are micro level such as the obstructions in pavements, while accessibility measures tend to be at macro level and do not include the whole journey. To help do this a GIS-based tool, AMELIA, has been developed. This paper discusses the specific elements of accessibility incorporated in AMELIA such as the modelling of walk and public transport accessibility, the micro level data required, the capabilities of the different social groups considered and how these affect the accessibility measures. Public transport accessibility maps produced for the elderly people are compared to those of the younger people using St Albans in Hertfordshire, UK, as a case study area. date: 2010 publisher: JOURNAL MAPS official_url: http://dx.doi.org/10.4113/jom.2010.1077 vfaculties: VENG oa_status: green language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green article_type_text: Article verified: verified_batch elements_source: Web of Science elements_id: 238180 doi: 10.4113/jom.2010.1077 language_elements: EN lyricists_name: Achuthan, Kamalasudhan lyricists_name: Mackett, Roger lyricists_name: Titheridge, Helena lyricists_id: AKAMA15 lyricists_id: RLMAC28 lyricists_id: HTITH94 full_text_status: public publication: Journal of Maps volume: 2010 pagerange: 220-229 issn: 1744-5647 citation: Achuthan, K; Titheridge, H; Mackett, RL; (2010) Mapping accessibility differences for the whole journey and for socially excluded groups of people.
