?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.title=Macadamia+Primary+School%3A+the+Forced+Academisation+of+a+Failing+School&rft.creator=Male%2C+T&rft.creator=Elton%2C+J&rft.description=This+research+reports+upon+the+initial+phase+of+a+longitudinal+qualitative+case+study+of+a+primary+school+in+the+north+of+England+undergoing+forced+academisation+as+a+result+of+an+unsatisfactory+inspection+by+the+Office+for+Standards+in+Education+(Ofsted).+The+aim+of+the+study+is+to+describe+how+the+process+affects+key+stakeholders+and+their+perceptions+of+their+individual+role+and+of+education+more+widely.+Data+collection+commenced+from+the+moment+when+the+school+received+the+judgement+about+its+performance+from+Ofsted+and+this+paper+will+examine+the+emerging+themes+during+the+ensuing+%E2%80%98acknowledging+failure%E2%80%99+(Stark%2C+1998)+part+of+the+process+of+school+transformation.+The+study+is+atypical+in+multiple+dimensions%3A+historically+researchers+have+experienced+difficulties+in+accessing+such+sensitive+and+delicate+educational+contexts+and+as+a+consequence+this+exclusion+has+lead+to+a+paucity+of+empirical+research+in+the+domain+of+failing+or+ineffective+schools+(Nicolaidou+and+Ainscow%2C+2003).+In+addition%2C+however%2C+as+one+of+the+first+schools+to+undergo+the+most+recent%2C+and+arguably+the+most+challenging+yet%2C+Ofsted+inspection+framework+the+school+became+one+of+the+first+so+called+%E2%80%9Cfailing%E2%80%9D+primary+schools+in+England+to+be+required+to+convert+to+an+Academy+under+the+coalition+government%E2%80%99s+school+improvement+policy+and+in+this+sense+the+research+is+highly+current.+The+study+seeks+to+capture+the+perceptions+of+the+full+range+of+stakeholders+involved+in+this+process%2C+including+the+responses+of+pupils%2C+parents+and+non+teaching+staff+alongside+the+more+traditionally+sampled+voices+of+education+professionals+and+governors.+The+early+findings+suggest+that+the+adult+stakeholders+have%2C+if+temporarily%2C+negatively+reframed+their+view+of+their+role+and+of+education%2C+with+many+experiencing+substantial+professional+identity+issues.+The+nascent+findings+provide+useful+insights+for+school+improvement+in+the+dawn+of+a+new+era+characterised+by+the+rapid+expansion+of+forced+structural+change+in+primary+schooling.&rft.subject=Academy%2C+Ofsted%2C+Special+Measures&rft.date=2016-06-28&rft.type=Proceedings+paper&rft.publisher=British+Education+Studies+Association+(BESA)&rft.language=eng&rft.source=+++++In%3A+++(Proceedings)+BESA+Ninth+Annual+Conference+2013.+++%3A+Swansea.+(2016)+++++&rft.format=text&rft.identifier=https%3A%2F%2Fdiscovery.ucl.ac.uk%2Fid%2Feprint%2F1472998%2F1%2F2013%2520BESA%2520-%2520Forced%2520Academisation.pdf&rft.identifier=https%3A%2F%2Fdiscovery.ucl.ac.uk%2Fid%2Feprint%2F1472998%2F&rft.rights=open
