In our study, we focus on two pairs of English sound contrasts: /s/-/ʃ/ and /t/-/θ/. Our analysis focuses on the anterior-posterior position of the tongue tip during the pronunciation of minimal pairs containing the contrasting sounds. Our results indicate that the contrast between /s/ and /ʃ/ made by the Dutch L2 speakers is slightly reduced compared to the contrast produced by the English L1 speakers. For the contrast /t/-/θ/, our findings show that while native English speakers clearly produce this contrast, Dutch speakers do not. Our results line up with earlier studies on the basis of acoustic data, and also illustrate that articulography is a suitable method of investigating pronunciation differences between first and second language speakers. date: 2015-08-14 publisher: International Phonetic Association official_url: https://www.internationalphoneticassociation.org/icphs-proceedings/ICPhS2015/proceedings.html vfaculties: VFBRS oa_status: green full_text_type: pub language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green verified: verified_manual elements_source: Manually entered elements_id: 1030407 isbn_13: 9780852619414 lyricists_name: Adank, Patricia lyricists_id: PADAN76 full_text_status: public series: International Congress of Phonetic Sciences publication: Proceedings of the 18th International Congress of Phonetic Sciences volume: 18 place_of_pub: Glasgow, Scotland event_title: 18th International Congress of Phonetic Sciences event_location: Glasgow event_dates: 10 August 2015 - 14 August 2015 issn: 241-0669 book_title: Proceedings of of ICPhS 2015 editors_name: Wolters, M editors_name: Livingstone, J editors_name: Beattie, B editors_name: Smith, R citation: Wieling, M; Veenstra, P; Weber, A; Adank, P; Tiede, M; (2015) Comparing L1 and L2 speakers using articulography.
