Smart notification is the capability of a smartphone for selecting the user's preferred kind of alert in particular situations using the full vocabulary of notification modalities and modulations. It therefore goes well beyond attempts to predict if or when to silence a ringing phone call. We demonstrate smart notification for messages received from a document retrieval system while the user is attending a meeting. The notification manager learns about their notification preferences from users' judgements about videos of meetings. It takes account of the relevance of the interruption to the meeting, whether the user is busy and the sensed location of the smartphone. Through repeated training, the notification manager learns to reliably predict the preferred notification modes for users and this learning continues to improve with use. date: 2015-03-18 date_type: published publisher: Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) official_url: https://doi.org/10.1145/2678025.2701390 vfaculties: VENG oa_status: green full_text_type: other language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green verified: verified_manual elements_source: Manually entered elements_id: 1025006 doi: 10.1145/2678025.2701390 isbn_13: 9781450333061 lyricists_name: Dowell, John lyricists_id: JDOWE39 actors_name: Dowell, John actors_name: Allington-Smith, Dominic actors_id: JDOWE39 actors_id: DAALL44 actors_role: owner actors_role: impersonator full_text_status: public series: International conference on Intelligent User Interfaces volume: 20 place_of_pub: New York, NY, USA pagerange: 296-299 pages: 4 event_title: 20th International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI '15) event_location: Atlanta institution: 20th International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces book_title: IUI '15: Proceedings of the 20th International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces editors_name: Brdiczka, O editors_name: Chau, P editors_name: Carenini, G editors_name: Pan, S editors_name: Kristensson, PO citation: Lopez-Tovar, H; Charalambous, A; Dowell, J; (2015) Managing Smartphone Interruptions through Adaptive Modes and Modulation of Notifications.
