However, negative-index metamaterials have not been realized at near-IR or visible frequencies due to difficulties of fabrication and to the generally poor optical properties of metals at these wavelengths. In this Letter, we report the first fabrication and experimental verification of a transversely structured metal-dielectricmetal multilayer exhibiting a negative refractive index around 2 mu m. Both the amplitude and the phase of the transmission and reflection were measured experimentally, and are in good agreement with a rigorous coupled wave analysis. date: 2005-09-23 publisher: AMERICAN PHYSICAL SOC official_url: http://dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.95.137404 vfaculties: VENG oa_status: green language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green article_type_text: Article verified: verified_batch elements_source: Web of Science elements_id: 85525 doi: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.95.137404 language_elements: EN lyricists_name: Panoiu, Nicolae-Coriolan lyricists_id: NPANO59 full_text_status: public publication: PHYS REV LETT volume: 95 number: 13 article_number: 137404 issn: 0031-9007 citation: Zhang, S; Fan, WJ; Panoiu, NC; Malloy, KJ; Osgood, RM; Brueck, SRJ; (2005) Experimental demonstration of near-infrared negative-index metamaterials.
