In an urban place, patterns of people movements, encounters, and rest, recurrently negotiating with natural cycles and architectural patterns, merge into expressive bundles of rhythms, which give a place its temporal distinctiveness. This paper investigates the aesthetics of place-temporality, focusing on its expression and representation; it explores its principal attributes, experience and significance. And, building on an analogy with musical aesthetics, the paper brings forward a conceptual framework for the understanding and analysis of temporality in urban space, with a focus on place-rhythms and the triad of place-temporal performance, place-tonality and a sense of time. These are the principal aesthetic processes through which place-temporality expresses and represents itself in urban space. date: 2013 publisher: Taylor & Francis official_url: http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/13574809.2013.772882 oa_status: green full_text_type: pub primo: open primo_central: open_green article_type_text: Article verified: verified_manual elements_source: Manually entered elements_id: 437725 doi: 10.1080/13574809.2013.772882 lyricists_name: Wunderlich, Filipa lyricists_id: FCOEL01 full_text_status: public publication: Journal of Urban Design volume: 18 number: 3 place_of_pub: UK pagerange: 383-408 citation: Wunderlich, F; (2013) Place-temporality and urban place-rhythms in urban analysis and design: an aesthetic akin to music.
