Nationalist ideology recognised the power\r\nof women as mothers and their consequent claim to equality within\r\nthe context of the nation. Having implicitly acknowledged the\r\njustice of feminism, nationalists then had to accommodate women's\r\ndemands. As nationalism changed from a cultural to a political\r\nforce, feminine patriotism slowly became a feminist movement.\r\nThese links with nationalism stimulated the development and\r\nself-confidence of the Czech women's movement but they also\r\nengendered in feminists an unjustified belief in the instinctive\r\nfeminism of Czech nationalists. The movement's development\r\nreflected that of feminist movements elsewhere. Demands for\r\neducation led to attempts to obtain for women a place In social\r\nand political life, culminating in the demand for the vote.\r\nIn the Czech case, however, such political demands produced\r\ntensions In the feminist movement. They raised the question of\r\nwhether feminists' first allegiance should be to women, or whether\r\nthey should merge their campaigns with those of the nationalist\r\nmovement, as represented by the many political parties which had\r\nwomen's rights on their programmes. Much of the energy of the\r\nmovement in the last ten years of this period was absorbed by\r\nthis debate and the more general issues of what feminists wanted\r\nto achieve and how they should do it. Even the non-feminist \r\nwomen's movements attached to the Social Democratic and National\r\nSocialist parties had similar-difficulties. All these groups of\r\nwomen, feminist and non-feminist were concerned to define their\r\nplace and establish themselves as an identifiable force. This led\r\nto an intense and fruitless preoccupation with organisation, which\r\nwas only brought to an end when the\r\nFirst World-War changed the assumptions of Czech political life."^^<http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#string> .
