While the rise of the Web has often been seen as a disruptive event in the history of hypertext, in this paper I argue that if we focus on the intersection between digital publishing and hypertext, there are stronger continuities. Through archival research into early participants of the Hypertext conferences including Ben Shneiderman and Michael Joyce, I recover some of these lost connections. date: 2025-03-09 date_type: published publisher: Informa UK Limited official_url: https://doi.org/10.1080/13614568.2025.2477123 oa_status: green full_text_type: pub language: eng primo: open primo_central: open_green verified: verified_manual elements_id: 2368535 doi: 10.1080/13614568.2025.2477123 lyricists_name: Rowberry, Simon lyricists_id: SROWB29 actors_name: Rowberry, Simon actors_id: SROWB29 actors_role: owner full_text_status: public publication: New Review of Hypermedia and Multimedia pagerange: 1-16 issn: 1361-4568 citation: Rowberry, Simon; (2025) The early ACM Hypertext Conference’s role in developing pre-Web reading on-screen.
